SOLVING THE POWER PROBLEM

That We have been confronted as a Nation for too long with the Power problem is no longer a secret. A foreigner who once visited this country was asked what local word he learnt during his brief visit and his answer was 'NEPA!!!!'.
How do we solve this NEPA!!!! problem? My answer is How did we solve the NITEL problem. When I was growing up, telephones were for the rich but today everyone carries around a handset.
Thanks to Deregulation, privatision, whatever you call it. Why don' we deregulate POWER and let communities, local governments, and states generate their own power.
In the North, generation may be by Solar, in Enugu state by Coal, in the Oil producing states by Natural Gas and in places with good flowing rivers and suitable terrain by Hydro generation. Such diversification of energy sources help our energy security and independence. Of course costs may differ but what is the alternative that we are experiencing now, can we trully say that we are presently paying equal rates for energy supply throughout the country?
When individual entrepreneurs are allowed to come into power generation on economic basis with good policy regulation by the Governments devoid of corruption, best prices for services will win at the end of day rather than the present forced extortions currently being experienced by the majority of the populace.
Knowing that major Power Projects are long term investments, a stable polity is important which is why our Political Leadership must maintain credibility despite regime changes and not reneging on commitments made by previous governments for rather frivolous, selfish motives which serves only to scare away much needed foreign investors - technical and financial.
